Hello everybody!
As I mentioned earlier this month, I have some of my Washington pictures ready to post here... that's coming up in a second. First though, I want to mention a couple of important things:
1. I'm finally leaving Windows behind! That's right... I'm now a Mac user! I bought an Apple Macintosh PowerBook 15" 1.5Ghz with 512MB of SDRAM and 128MB video.
It's a real beauty I tell ya! :-D It's been taking me a while to get used to, but the more I use it, the more I'm lovin' it!
2. Buying the Apple machine finally broke down the last hurdle I had in returning to school to study graphic design...yep! I finally enrolled! :-D
This coming September I'll be a student again, studying Desktop Publishing @ George Brown College. I should take about 1 year to finish the required courses then I'll jump into Interior Design and fill in with such additional courses as French and Public Speaking.
I'm looking forward to improving myself and refining my skills.
Ok... as you may have read here or know by speaking with me, on my recent trip to New York City, I decided to go check out Washington for a day.
At the end of the long day of visiting the Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building, watching Spiderman 2, etc ... I returned late to the Hostel and decided to leave on the 4am Greyhound bus to Washington. We stopped in Baltimore near the end of the 5 hour bus ride and I arrived in the US Capital sunburned from the previous day and quite tired from not sleeping much on the bus.
Nonetheless, I was determined to see as much as I could fill my eyes with in one day.
Here I am having my first "Washington experience"... Viewing The Washington Capitol.
The great thing about Washington is that the museums are ALL FREE!!! :D
One of my favourite interests is Space & Aviation... well... nothing better than to start the day with a visit to the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum . Check out Alan Sheppard's space capsule... this is the FIRST American space ship!
and here we see the Apollo 11 capsule that carried Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins back to Earth after having landed a human on the moon for the first time!
Here's a beautiful picture of antique aircrafts hanging from the ceiling of the museum...
another view of Apollo 11's capsule...
The National Museum of Natural History was too big to visit in one day. I had spent most of my time at the Space and Aviation museum... I did get to see many dino bones..
The National Museum of American History was impressive. I need to go back to Washington just to see this museum more thoroughly. There's just so much to see. I saw an exhibit of all the American Presidents, I saw the giant American flag that gave birth to their national anthem: "The Star Spangled Banner", among many other things....
Here is THE Oscar the Grouch from Sesame Street..
The First Apple Computer!
George Washington's outfit...
After exiting the museums, I walked up to a balcony and spotted the Washington Monument...
I headed towards the Lincoln Memorial from where I took this picture...
Walking up the steps...
The Famous View from the Lincoln Memorial ... Jenny!!! I'm here Forrest! (for those of you who watched Forrest Gump..lol)
Abraham Lincoln sits firmly behind me...
Now's time to check out the Whitehouse.... my skin is burning like crazy at this point... the "Whitness" of Washington acting like a huge tanning bed!!! I gotta get out of the sun! So I hopped from under one tree to another, trying to find shade... I walked through a War memorial where I spotted this...
...and made a new friend... a suprisingly unafraid Squirrel....
...and I arrived at Washington's most recognized building: THE WHITEHOUSE!
I wanted to check out the Whitehouse from the front.... what you are used to seeing on tv is actually the back of the house...
I walked a couple of blocks up to Pennsylvania Avenue which fronts the Whitehouse. It was closed for construction. Before September 11, 2001 it was easy to park a car in front of the Whitehouse and.. well.. you get the point. Pensylvania Avenue is now being converted into a pedestrian only street.
And that's it. I walked back to the bus station and returned to New York :-)
