Billboards in Space

From CNN.com:

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -- The U.S. government does not want billboards in space.

The Federal Aviation Administration proposed Thursday to amend its regulations to ensure that it can enforce a law that prohibits "obtrusive" advertising in zero gravity.

"Objects placed in orbit, if large enough, could be seen by people around the world for long periods of time," the FAA said in a regulatory filing.

Currently, the FAA lacks the authority to enforce the existing law.

For instance, outsized billboards deployed by a space company into low Earth orbit could appear as large as the moon and be seen without a telescope, the FAA said. Big and bright advertisements might hinder astronomers.

"Large advertisements could destroy the darkness of the night sky," regulators said.

... Now there's a dilemma I couldn't wait to see coming. The futuristic world I imagined as a child is coming into fruition. Sure there are no flying cars but technology has come into our lives in a way some predicted but I'm not sure it was to this extent. Everybody owns a gadget of some sort purchased in the past year or two.

Technology is becoming so affordable it's disposable. Many people have a new cell phone every 6 months or so. Others throw away their 4 or 5 year computers and replace them with the latest model.

I very much expect to see a revolution in personal transportation in Toronto with vehicles like the Segway, the SMART car and soon to be launched fuel cell cars.

In a couple of years, Virgin Galactic will launch it's first commercial space ship. Regular people will be flying into earth orbit in less than 600 days from today!

Furthermore, the United Nations predicts that more than half of the population of developed nations will own a robot of some sort.

This could come in the form of entertainment robots such as Sony's Q-Rio or Aibo, as automatic lawnmowers or vacumms, or more ambitious projects like the the robotic clothes presser. Iron your shirts no more!

It's only a matter of time before we have semi-intelligent robots keeping us company and doing our daily chores.

Welcome to the Future.
